armed horsemen supported by the government
of Sudan.

LP & CD (MCA Records) |

A compilation put out by the folks at Red
Hot -- an organization dedicated to "Fighting Aids Through
Popular Culture". Previous sets by the Red Hot group
have focused on jazz, bossa, and other music -- and this
time around, the focus is Africa, currently suffering from
a rampant AIDS epidemic. As a response to the problem, Red
Hot have brought together a host of different artists in
a set of new Afro Funk tracks.

Baadasssss!
Soundtrack
CD (BBE) UK |
|
 |
A great mix of old and new funky tunes
-- put together in support of Mario Van Peebles' Baadassss
-- along with some dialogue snippets from the film! The feel
here is very much in the same vein as the soundtrack for
his pop's original Sweet Sweetback's Baadassss Song -- done
in a playful style that has the dialogue slipping into the
tunes, back into the dialogue, and back again -- all with
lots of stylistic changes that keep things interesting! Tracks
include "Just Do It" by Pete Rock with Pharoahe
Monche, "Get Down" by War, "Main Title" by
Tyler Bates, "Lumumba" by Miram Makeba, "Cou
Cou" by Zap Mama, "Che Che Cole Makossa" by
Antibalas, "Green & Gold" by Roy Ayers, "Sweetback's
Theme" by Melvin Van Peebles, and "Love" by
Donn. (From the Funky Compilations CD (A-L) page.)

Funky classics -- remade! This set may
well be the best in Ubiquity's excellent Rewind series --
a compilation collection that focuses on new versions of
older funky tunes -- some of which are pulled from obscure
recent singles and import recordings, others of which appear
on this great set for the first time! The quality of work
is excellent -- not only in the choice of original tunes
to cover, which is already great, but in the way the artists
handle them -- taking them to whole new places, and using
the core elements of the tracks to build tunes that have
a completely different feel! Titles include Chakachas' "Jungle
Fever" redone by Louie Vega, Cymande's "Genevieve" redone
by Greyboy, Willie Colon's "Che Che Cole" redone
by Antibalas in a "makossa mix", Betty Carter's "Open
Your Eyes" redone by Elsa, Gil Scott-Heron's "Willing" redone
by Damon Aaron, Herbie Hancock's "Rough" redone
by John Arnold, Lorez Alexandria's take on "Baltimore
Oriole" redone by P'Taah, Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Riot
In Lagos" redone by Swag, The Monkee's "Porpoise
Song" redone by Nobody, AC/DC's "All Night Long" redone
by Bing Ji Ling, and Sahib Shihab's "Please Don't Leave" redone
by Paoplo Fereghini. (From the New Grooves LP (M-Z and Various)
page.)

"Oh great, yet another label trying
to cash in on the Afro-beat
renaissance," you say. But wait, Blow Records has impressively
compiled a collection of songs that really illustrates the
vast diversity
of Nigerian music and its influences past and present. From
tight,
smaller groups like Lafayette Afro Rock Band and Blo, to
larger
ensembles like Fela and Tony Allen, to Manu Dibango's electric
funk,
as well as a contemporary take from NYC's very own Antibalas.
The
strength in this collection is in its display of the variety
of approaches
that lay in this unique African art form. [GA] (Other music)
