Stuart Bogie has been a horn wizard, conductor and composer for Antibalas since joining the band in 2001. The Evanston, Illinois native is currently the featured saxophone soloist in the Broadway play, FELA! In addition to his afrobeat work, Bogie has recorded and/or performed with a ridiculous range of musical talent, including TV on the Radio, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Burning Spear, Sinead O’Conner, The Wu-Tang Clan, Dub is a Weapon, Congo Ashanti Roy, Tony Allen, Kologbo, Tunde Williams, Jeremiah Lockwood, Transmission, Fire of Space, The Eternal Buzz Brass Band, Chin Chin, The Sharp Things, The El Michels Affair, Sharon Jones & the Dapkings, The Fu Arkist-Ra, Butch Morris, Bill Brovold and Larval, Caural, Dragons of Zynth, Baaba Maal, The Loser’s Lounge, State Radio, Gomez, Volney Litmus, Bright Black Morning Light, Public Enemy, The Roots, Paul Simon, Harlem Shakes, Noba, Colin Stetson, Michael Leonhart, Ticklah, Angelique Kidjo, the Roots, Mark Ronson, and Saul Williams.
Bogie also has a long history of working with producer Dave Sitek, for whom he contributed bass harmonica, tenor sax, contra-bass clarinet to the critically acclaimed TV on the Radio album, Return to Cookie Mountain, which Pitchfork Media named the #2 best album of 2006. In 2008, Bogie was recruited to contribute tenor and baritone saxophone and arrange the horn parts to TV on the Radio’s Dear Science and–following the release of that acclaimed record–he toured extensively with TVOTR across Europe and North America, making television appearances on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Late Show with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, and The Colbert Report. Aside from contributing horns to the last two TVOTR records, Bogie also played saxophone on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ It’s Blitz! where his work can be heard on “Zero,” “Dragon Queen,” and “Hysteric.” He has also worked with Sitek on tracks by Zach De La Rocha, Holly Miranda, Massive Attack, Wale, Foals, Get Hustle, Pink Noise Telepathe and Scarlett Johansson’s album of Tom Waits covers, “Anywhere I Lay My Head.”
The woodwind specialist is also a member of the bands the Sway Machinery, Volney Litmus, and the children’s group, The FunkeyMonkeys, in addition to performing solo whenever he can. Currently, Bogie also leads the group Superhuman Happiness, which recently released the EP, Fall Down Seven Times Stand Up Eight, and features members of Antibalas, the Sway Machinery, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Bogie now calls Brooklyn “home,” and enjoys camping, studying music and improvised theater.
