Jas Walton was born and raised in midcoast Maine, and came up listening to a mix of musical traditions and styles. His father’s eclectic record collection was an early influence – spanning from Stan Getz to Ruben Blades, Beethoven to the Beatles. Jas moved to New York City in 2006 to study at the NYU Jazz Department, where he put down musical roots, networking with musicians in a variety of fields, and performing (tenor saxophone, flute, clarinet) in New York.
As a side man, Jas performs jazz, afrobeat, pop, traditional rhythm-and-blues, rock and roll, and modern/improvisational jazz with equal excitement and self-assurance. Armed with a firm belief that all different kinds of music share basic statutes and similar principles, Jas has enjoyed collaborating and performing with many musical acts over the years: Antibalas, String Cheese Incident, Asphalt Orchestra, Josh Garrels, Deer Tick, Sinkane, EMEFE, Superhuman Happiness, Vacationer, Father Figures, and many more.
